‘Nurse,’ he said raising his voice. Big Nurse appeared at the door and Rebecca removed her jacket.
‘Just a little prick,’ he said to her.
She looked at the ampoule that lay on the sheet next to her.
‘What is Largactil?’ she asked pointing at the label.
‘It’s just something,’ he said speaking slowly and pressing down the plunger. ‘That will help you...’ he paused not finishing his sentence.
He pulled the needle out quickly and dropped the syringe on the floor as he caught her from falling. Big Nurse rushed over and picked up her legs and they laid her flat on the examining couch. Her skirt had ridden up her thighs exposing her slender brown legs. Big Nurse discretely pulled the skirt down as the author walked into the small room.
‘Thanks Bill, I owe you one,’ he said.
‘Not at all. She’ll be out for around eighteen to twenty hours. Careful how you handle her.’
The two men who had wheeled the author in on the trolley, wheeled Rebecca out on the same trolley and strapped her unconscious body into the passenger seat. The author wrapped a scarf around her head and put a pair of sunglasses on her face. The Jaguar purred as he eased it into the flow of traffic and followed the road towards the river. They crossed The Thames at Putney Bridge and turned onto the south circular. He had never driven a sports car before and stuck to the speed limit. After he had passed through Epsom he turned onto a small country lane and pushed down the accelerator for a moment to feel the power but let it off just as quickly. He turned into his driveway and parked the car in the double garage.
He grunted as he heaved her floppy body onto his shoulder and carried her down the stairs into the basement. She weighed exactly what he was expecting her to weigh. He decided to place her next to James, a character from one of his earlier books. They’ll be good company when she wakes up, he thought. He looked around at his handiwork. With a smile, he switched off the basement light and walked up the stairs.
