It was another glorious day and beams of sunlight burst through the small basement window and scattered on the floor. Rebecca could feel the warm sun on her face before she opened her eyes. ‘What’s with the weather?’ she asked pushing herself up onto her elbows. ‘This is England, where’s the rain?’ She looked around at the sleeping bodies, no movement. She crawled into her old box, sat on Conrad, and tickled him. It did not take him long to respond and soon roles were reversed and she had her arms pinned behind her back and was in fits of giggles trying to fight him off. They tried to wake up James but the author was still asleep and James could not be roused. ‘Have you seen what the time is?’ Conrad asked holding up his chunky G-Shock watch. ‘It’s only 6:15. Nobody will be up at this time.’
‘Perfect time to do more investigating,’ Rebecca said.
‘I’m ready to investigate,’ Conrad said looking down at Rebecca’s chest. They were standing facing each other. Conrad popped the top button off the oversized man’s shirt she had slept in.
‘No,’ she said pushing his hand away and pulling him towards the stairs. ‘We don’t have time for that. Anyway, I’m not that sort of girl. We have to investigate while everyone’s asleep.’
‘Is this standard detective dress?’ he asked her. She blushed when she realised that she was only wearing a man’s shirt with rolled-up sleeves. She walked over to where she had left her clothes and facing away from him, she dropped the shirt to the floor. She could feel his eyes on her naked body, visually exploring, and her skin tingled. She pulled on her jeans and a tight fitting T-shirt and turned around. He had only half fumbled on a pair of jeans and she smiled at him as he rushed to finish getting dressed.
They headed up the stairs to the garage and into the kitchen, moving silently and gracefully as only fictionals can. Rebecca felt the muscles in her stomach tighten as she followed Conrad's bold steps up to the landing on the first floor.
‘Let’s just make sure they’re still both asleep before we start snooping about,’ he whispered back to her. The door to the master bedroom was ajar and through the crack, they could see the author sleeping. Where Genevieve should have been the sheet was pulled back and there was an empty space. They looked at each other. Rebecca raised her eyebrows and rolled her eyes towards the bed. Conrad shook his head in response. The door to the study was open and they tiptoed over and peered around the corner. Genevieve was on the phone talking in a loud whisper, ‘…what do you mean it’s going to cost five grand? You know I can’t afford that sort of…’ she appeared to have been cut short by the person she was talking to.
