‘I’m very busy at the moment with a client. Pelolina is almost finished,’ he said pointing at the young girl attending to the elderly lady. ‘If you wouldn’t mind waiting a few minutes she’ll be able to do you.’
‘Okay,’ Rebecca said flicking her eyes in Genevieve’s direction.
‘What’s your name?’ Gunther picked up a long pencil with brightly coloured feathers at the end of it and moved behind the large appointment book.
‘Rebecca.’
‘Very good, Rebecca, just take a seat. Pelolina will be with you.’ With quick little swinging motions of his hips, Gunther scurried over to Pelolina and whispered in her ear. They looked back at Rebecca and Pelolina smiled at him and nodded.
‘Don’t you like new customers?’ Genevieve asked in a low voice as Gunther returned.
‘I love new customers but can’t you see how she’s dressed? She’s wearing jeans, a sweatshirt and Timberland boots. I’m trying to encourage a slightly different type of clientele in here.’
‘Those jeans and that T-shirt look like designer wear to me.’
‘I know, but there’s a difference between going out and buying designer clothes and wearing them properly.’
Genevieve felt a glow of satisfaction come over her. In her mind, she pictured the elegant powder blue summer dress she was wearing under the protective plastic apron Gunther had thrown over her. It was the perfect choice for today. It didn’t understate her mood and was not ostentatious. Gunther was not that bad, she decided. He did have very good taste.
‘Why are you so good at this, Gunther? Where did you get your training?’
Gunther pursed his thick Germanic lips before returning his mouth to a smile. He licked his two index fingers and smoothed down the blonde moustache that underlined his large nose.
‘I’ll tell you a secret,’ he said with an even broader smile on his face. ‘I’ve never had any training as a hairdresser or beautician. I bet that surprises you, doesn’t it?’
Genevieve was taken aback. She expected the person who touched her hair to retain several certificates of excellence in their field.
